Naidu emphasised the critical need for real-time coordination among Air Traffic Control (ATC), airlines, ground handlers, and airport operators to ensure smooth operations during low visibility conditions. All airlines have confirmed their commitment to deploying CAT II/III compliant aircraft and pilots at Delhi and other fog-affected airports.
Notably, three out of four runways at Delhi Airport have activated CAT III Instrument Landing Systems (ILS) to enhance landing capabilities in poor visibility. Additionally, the airport operator has been advised to install LED screens at prominent locations throughout the airport to provide real-time updates on visibility conditions, flight statuses, and weather information.
To further improve operations during fog, Delhi Airport has been instructed to deploy more ‘Follow Me’ vehicles to guide aircraft safely on the ground during low visibility situations. The Minister also stressed the importance of proactive communication, directing airlines to inform passengers about potential delays or cancellations due to visibility issues.
In a significant directive, the Minister stated that flights must be cancelled if delays exceed three hours, ensuring that passengers are not stranded for extended periods; all check-in counters are to be fully staffed during peak times to minimise inconvenience.
Moreover, the Minister called for measures to facilitate the smooth re-entry of passengers stranded inside aircraft due to weather or technical delays, ensuring a seamless re-boarding process when flights resume.
