Delhi weather today: Dense fog affects flights and trains as cold wave prevails in national capital

A thick blanket of fog covered parts of north India on Saturday, January 4, reducing visibility to zero in many areas. Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana were among the regions affected, with commuters struggling to navigate the dense fog.

The early morning flight operations at Delhi Airport were severely impacted by thick fog. IndiGo announced that flight schedules are impacted due to reduced visibility in the national capital. “#6ETravelAdvisory: #Delhi continues to experience significantly reduced visibility due to fog, impacting flight schedules,” it wrote on X.

Air India also reported disruptions in Delhi and northern India, citing poor visibility due to dense fog.

In an update on X, it wrote, “Poor visibility due to dense fog is impacting flight operations in Delhi and parts of Northern India. Please check your flight status before heading to the airport.”

Delhi Airport authorities have also issued an update on flight operations. While landings and take-offs continue, flights that are not CAT III compliant may face disruptions.

The dense fog further disrupted trains’ movement to and from the New Delhi railway station. According to reports, over 40 trains arriving and departing from the national capital faced disruptions because of heavy fog which caused most trains to run behind schedule.

The list of delayed trains includes the Vande Bharat Express, Jammu Rajdhani, Andhra Pradesh Express and the Grand Trunk Express.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted very dense fog conditions to prevail during late-night and early-morning hours in isolated pockets of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and some parts of Uttar Pradesh. Dense fog conditions are very likely to prevail during late-night and early-morning hours in isolated pockets of Himachal Pradesh, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Odisha, Assam, and Meghalaya; in isolated pockets of north Madhya Pradesh and Bihar on January 4; in Assam and Meghalaya on January 4 and 5; and in Uttar Pradesh during January 7-9.

The IMD reported a temperature of 11 degrees Celsius in Delhi at 8:30 am on Friday. The air quality in the national capital was in the ‘very poor’ category, with an AQI of 380 at 9 am, as per the Central Pollution Control Board.

The weather department also predicted light to moderate fairly widespread to widespread rainfall or snowfall over Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, Muzaffarabad and Himachal Pradesh over the coming days.
