Virat Kohli steps in as captain on day two after Jasprit Bumrah walks off injured: Reports

Former captain Virat Kohli took over the captaincy for India in Bumrah’s absence, as India’s star pacer walked out of the match for a medical condition. Jasprit Burmrah reportedly faced an unspecified injury during the second day of the fifth and final test against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Bumrah, who went under scan had replaced the rested Rohit Sharma as captain for this test, could be seen on the television broadcast leaving in a car from underneath the SCG grandstands about an hour after the lunch break on Saturday.

India team management has not confirmed the injury or whether Bumrah, the standout player of the series, will be able to bowl again in the match. Bumrah bowled during the first session and did not appear hampered by an injury as he picked up yet another wicket for the series by removing Marnus Labuschagne, to go with his wicket of Usman Khawaja in the final over on Friday.

The 31-year-old has an overall series tally of 32 wickets, which is the highest by an Indian bowler in a single series in Australia. Bumrah passed spinner Bishan Singh Bedi who had 31 wickets from five matches during the 1977-78 series.

India dominated the post-lunch session, taking the remaining five wickets, with Mohammed Siraj (3/51), Prasidh Krishna (4/42), and Nitish Reddy (2/32) stepping up in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah (2/33), who left the field for scans due to an unspecified injury. For Australia, Beau Webster (57) scored a half-century on debut, but once he was dismissed, India swiftly dismantled the tail.

Earlier, resuming at 9/1, Australia lost Marnus Labuschagne (2) early. Siraj then struck twice in four balls, removing Sam Konstas (23) and Travis Head (4), leaving the hosts at 4 for 39. Steve Smith (33) and Webster (28) added a quick 57 for the fifth wicket, but Prasidh sent Smith back just before lunch.
