CNN-News18 reported that three possible options for the site could be the ‘Rashtriya Smriti Sthal’, a site located between the memorials of Jawaharlal Nehru and Sanjay Gandhi, or a site near the memorial of Chaudhary Charan Singh.
The final decision on the site would depend on the family’s approval.
Also, on December 27, Home Minister Amit Shah had communicated to the top Congress leadership that the government would set up a trust to construct a memorial for Manmohan Singh. The trust could have as members the government ministers and officials, and representation from the Congress and the family, the report said.
News agency PTI reported that Central Public Works Department (CPWD) officials have visited sites around the Sanjay Gandhi memorial and identified some spots where a memorial could come up.
Singh — the architect of India’s economic reforms — died on December 26 at the age of 92 following age-related complications.
The Congress criticised the government for holding his last rites at Nigambodh Ghat.
The BJP and the Congress also engaged in a bitter war of words over the cremation and the setting up of a memorial.
