If you’ve filed your return and are wondering about the status of your refund, there are two main ways to check: the Income Tax e-filing portal and the NSDL website.
Steps to check income tax refund status
- To begin with, visit the official Income Tax e-filing portal. After logging in using your PAN and password, navigate to the ‘e-File’ section.
- Select ‘Income Tax Returns’ and click on ‘View Filed Returns’. This section will show you the status of both current and past returns filed.
- By clicking ‘View details,’ you can track the refund status of your filed ITR.
Alternatively, taxpayers can check the refund status through the NSDL website. By entering your PAN, Assessment Year (AY), and captcha, you can easily find out if your refund is on its way. This method is simple and straightforward for users without access to the e-filing portal.
Types of refund status
Once you’ve checked your status, it’s essential to understand the various refund statuses that may appear.
Refund issued: If the status shows “Refund issued,” your ITR has been processed, and the refund has been credited to your account.
No demand No refund: If the status is “No demand No refund,” you neither owe taxes nor are entitled to a refund, and you should verify the details with the IT department.
Refund failure: A “Refund failure” indicates an issue with your bank details, which can be rectified by updating and prevalidating your bank account on the portal.
Other statuses include “Refund status not determined,” meaning your ITR is still being processed, or “Demand determined,” which means you owe additional tax. In such cases, the status will prompt you to verify your tax calculations or make payments if necessary.
By following these steps, taxpayers can easily track the status of their refund and take necessary actions if required. Regularly checking for updates ensures that taxpayers stay informed and can promptly resolve any issues with their returns.
