Bypolls for 16 seats across Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Kerala underway
Voting for the by-elections for 16 seats across Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Kerala commenced at 7 am on Wednesday, November 20.

Of the 16 seats, four are in Punjab, nine are in Uttar Pradesh, and one each are in Uttarakhand and Kerala.

The votes will be counted on Saturday, November 23.

Punjab

In Punjab, bypolls for four assembly segments — Gidderbaha, Dera Baba Nanak, Chabbewal (SC) and Barnala — are being held from 7 am to 6 pm. The counting will be held on Saturday, November 23.

The bypolls are required after the MLAs representing the seats were elected to the Lok Sabha. Of the four seats, Dera Baba Nanak, Gidderbaha and Chabbewal were earlier held by the Congress and Barnala was held by the AAP.

A total of 45 candidates, including three women, are contesting for the bypolls of these four seats, where 6.96 lakh voters across 831 polling booths are eligible to exercise their franchise.

The bypolls will decide the fate of key contestants such as former Punjab finance minister and BJP nominee Manpreet Singh Badal, Amrita Warring and Jatinder Kaur of Congress and Hardeep Singh Dimpy Dhillon, Dr Ishank Kumar Chabbewal of AAP as well as Kewal Singh Dhillon, Sohan Singh Thandal and Ravikaran Singh Kahlon of the BJP.

In the current 117-member Punjab Assembly, AAP holds 91 seats, Congress has 15, Shiromani Akali Dal has three seats, BJP has two, BSP 1 and there is one independent MLA.

Uttar Pradesh 

The bypolls are being held for the Karhal, Katehari, Meerapur, Majhawan, Ghaziabad, Siisamau, Phulpur, Khair and Kundarki seats. A total of 90 candidates are in the fray for the same. Ghaziabad has a total of 14 candidates, the highest.

A total of 34.35 lakh registered voters in the state will decide the fate of the 90 candidates. Of these 18.46 lakh are men, 15..88 lakh are women and 161 are third-gender voters

Sisamau has the smallest voter base, while Ghaziabad has the largest.

Uttarakhand 

The assembly seat in Rudraprayag district in Kedarnath has been vacant after the BJP MLA Shaila Rani Rawat died in July this year.

Six candidates are contesting for the seat, which includes a straight contest between Congress’s Manoj Rawat and BJP’s Asha Nautiyal.

A total of 173 polling booths are operating for the same.

Kerala

Bypolls are also being held for the Palakkad seat in Kerala.

The Palakkad seat has been vacant ever since Shafi Parambil vacated it after his election to Lok Sabha in April this year from Vadakara. There are a total of 1.95 lakh registered voters in the constituency. A total of 184 booths have been set up for the bypolls on Wednesday, November 23.
