World leaders condole the death of Dr. Manmohan Singh, praise his contributions to India

Former Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, passed away on Thursday (December 26) night at 92. He was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi after his health deteriorated rapidly and he had to be rushed to the emergency department for medical treatment.

Messages from numerous world leaders across the political spectrum have poured in after his death, talking about his contributions and the strong ties he fostered with their nations.

The Secretary of State for the United States, Antony Blinken, said, “The United States offers our sincere condolences to the people of India for the passing of former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh. Dr Singh was one of the greatest champions of the US-India strategic partnership, and his work laid the foundation for much of what our countries have accomplished together in the past two decades. His leadership in advancing the US-India Civil Nuclear Cooperation Agreement signified a major investment in the potential of the US-India relationship.”

He also noted the contributions of Dr. Singh’s economic reforms that drove India’s growth and strengthened ties between the United States and India.

Denis Alipov, Russian Ambassador to India, wrote on X, about Dr. Singh’s pivotal role in strengthening India-Russia ties, noting his expertise as an economist and unwavering dedication to India’s progress.

Former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper took to X to express his sorrow over Dr. Singh’s death, writing, “I am saddened to learn of the passing of my former colleague, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. He was an individual of exceptional intelligence, integrity, and wisdom. Laureen and I wish to convey our condolences to all his family and friends.”

“So sad to hear Manmohan Singh has passed. I always found him a delight to work with, and like a benevolent father figure. He was a good friend of the Maldives,” said former President of Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed.

Former Afghan President, Hamid Karzai, said, “India has lost one of its most illustrious sons. Dr Manmohan Singh was an unwavering ally and friend to the people of Afghanistan. I profoundly mourn his passing and extend my deepest condolences to his family, the government, and the people of India. May his soul find eternal peace,” in a post on X.
