A statement by a senior officer revealed that traffic police will be deployed in ample numbers at different points of the city, with a focus on markets, malls and areas where celebrations attract people in large numbers, such as Connaught Place, Hauz Khas and others.
The Delhi Traffic Police has made new traffic arrangements for areas near Connaught Place, as a massive crowd is highly likely to visit the location to celebrate New Year’s Eve.
Restrictions are to be in effect from 8 pm onwards on Tuesday in Connaught Place and will last till the end of New Year’s celebrations. These shall apply to all private and public transport vehicles, as per Dhal Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic).
The DCP has also warned that strict action will be taken against offences such as drunk driving, over-speeding, stunt biking, zig-zag, reckless and dangerous driving, etc.
Additionally, the police have said that vehicles will not be permitted to proceed towards Connaught Place beyond roundabout Mandi House, roundabout Bengali Market, North foot of Ranjit Singh Flyover, Minto Road – Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Marg crossing, RK Ashram Marg-Chitragupta Marg Crossing, round about Gole Market, round about GPO, Kasturba Gandhi Road, etc.
Vehicular traffic will also not be permitted in the inner, middle or outer circles of Connaught Place, barring those vehicles which have valid passes.
Those with motorcycles may park their vehicles near Gole Dak Khana, Patel Chowk on Rakab Ganj Road behind AIR, Mandi House on Copernicus Marg up to Baroda House, Minto Road on DD Upadhaya Marg and Press Road area, Panchkuian Road on RK Ashram Marg, KG Marg-Ferozshah Road Crossing on Copernicus Lane, Windsor Place.
Notably, limited parking space will be available near Connaught Place and will be on a first come first serve basis. Those vehicles that have been parked unauthorised will be towed away and prosecuted.
Prominent arrangements at and around India Gate to regulate traffic for both pedestrians and vehicles have also been made.
If there is significant pedestrian movement, vehicles shall be prevented from passing through C-Hexagon, the India Gate area and will be diverted from Q-Point, round about Sunheri Masjid, Rajpath Rafi Marg, round about Windsor Place, roundabout Rajindra Prasad road-Janpath, KG Marg-Ferozeshah Road, roundabout Mandi House, Mathura Road-Purana Qila road etc.
The police have recommended that visitors make use of public transport owing to the lack of parking space at India Gate.
As a major gathering is expected at Delhi Zoo, there may be traffic congestion on Mathura Road. Hence, motorists have been advised to avoid Bhairon Road/Mathura Road between Hazrat Nizamuddin and Pragati Maidan as well.
