Mahakumbh Nagar: Camels brought from Rajasthan become major tourist attraction ahead of Mela

A caravan of camels brought from Jaisalmer in Rajasthan to Mahakumbh Nagar have become a major attraction for tourists, especially children, at Sangam area of Prayagraj, weeks ahead of the Maha Kumbh Mela begins, PTI reported on December 26.

Despite the Maha Kumbh Mela being over two weeks away, devotees have started gathering on the banks of the holy Ganga and Yamuna rivers and at the Sangam, the Uttar Pradesh government stated in a press note. As Christmas holidays are ongoing, large number of devotees, along with families, are visiting the Sangam to take a holy dip.

The improved facilities at the ghats, being prepared for the Maha Kumbh, have also created a more relaxed, picnic-like ambiance for visitors.

“To enhance the experience, camel rides from Kila Ghat to Sangam Nose have become a popular activity. These camels, specially brought from Rajasthan, have become a favourite, among children. The camels are beautifully decorated and given names like Ramu, Ghanshyam, and Radheshyam by their owners,” the statement added.

On Christmas Day, families were seen at the holy site taking a sacred dip in the rivers. While preparations for the Maha Kumbh continued at the ghats, and food stalls were busy, the camel rides seemed more popular along the riverbanks, PTI reported.

The statement by the Uttar Pradesh Tourism department mentioned that 50 camels from Jaisalmer had reached Prayagraj via Pratapgarh.

“These camels, a symbol of Rajasthan’s heritage, have been carefully decorated and outfitted with padded seats for the comfort of riders. Women and children, in particular, have enjoyed these camel rides, which have added a festive touch to the atmosphere,” the release added.

A caretaker of the camels explained that the animals were sourced for the fair each camel is valued between ₹45,000 and ₹50,000, and visitors can enjoy a ride for a nominal fee between ₹50 and ₹100.
