Another video of the crash shows the plane descending rapidly before bursting into flames soon after it hit the seashore; a thick black billowed into the sky.
According to Azerbaijan Airlines, the Embraer 190 jet was flying from Baku to Grozny in southern Russia.
“Preliminary: after a collision with birds, due to an emergency on board, its commander decided to ‘go’ to an alternate airfield – Aktau was chosen,” Russia’s aviation watchdog shared on Telegram.
Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev said the plane changed course due to poor weather. The cause of the accident was unknown and should be fully investigated, he said. “This is a great tragedy that has become a tremendous sorrow for the Azerbaijani people,” he added.
The flight made an emergency landing approximately three kilometres from Aktau, the airline said.
Twenty-nine survivors, including two children, were pulled from the wreckage in a major rescue operation, Kazakhstan’s Deputy Prime Minister Kanat Bozumbayev said. He added that 11 among them are in critical condition. The plane was carrying 67 people.
