Joe Root poised for ODI return, included in England’s squad for ICC Champions Trophy

Joe Root is poised for a comeback in the ODIs as England has announced its 15-man squad for next year’s ICC Champions Trophy.

Root has enjoyed a stunning run in Tests in 2024 as he scored 1556 runs in 31 innings, the most by a batter this year.  This year Root became England’s leading-run scorer and also the batsman with most number of centuries in Tests.

The 33-year-old former England skipper though has not played an ODI match in over a year. His last 50-over international match was against Pakistan in Kolkata during the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Ben Stokes, who reversed his ODI retirement to play the ODI World Cup, has not been included in the Champions Trophy squad. England’s red-ball captain has been sidelined due to a hamstring injury that he picked during the third Test against New Zealand at Hamilton.

Root has played 171 ODIs and scored 6522 runs including 16 centuries and 39 fifties.

The squad will be led by Jos Buttler.

England squad for Champions Trophy:

Jos Buttler (c), Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Ben Duckett, Jamie Overtone, Jamie Smith, Liam Livingstone, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Saquib Mahmood, Philp Salt and Mark Wood.
