Former Haryana CM OP Chautala’s body kept at family farmhouse, last rites in afternoon

The body of former Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala, who passed away on Friday, December 20, has been placed at the family’s Teja Khera farmhouse in Sirsa on December 21 to allow people to pay their final respects, according to a leader from Chautala’s Indian National Lok Dal (INLD).

The leader said that a state funeral is set to be held at 3 pm in the Teja Khera village.

Chautala passed away in Gurugram at the age of 89. According to a spokesperson from INLD, the former chief minister was taken to a hospital after his health deteriorated. He eventually succumbed to cardiac arrest.

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar will attend Chautala’s funeral, as will other dignitaries.

Chautala’s younger son Abhay Singh Chautala is a leader of the INLD, while his elder son Ajay Singh Chautala is the head of the JJP party. Both were present at Teja Khera, as were various other family members, including former deputy chief minister Dushyant Chautala.

Congress leaders Randeep Singh Surjewala and Kumari Selja also arrived at the Chautala farmhouse to pay their last respects to the five-time Haryana chief minister, a popular yet controversial figure in Indian politics. People have also gathered in the village in large numbers to pay their obeisance.

The Haryana government announced a state mourning for three days on Friday. The state government has also declared Saturday a public holiday in all its offices as a way of showing respect for the late politician.
