Punjab and Haryana High Court urges media to avoid naming judges in reports

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has requested the media to refrain from naming judges in their reports on court proceedings, orders, and judgments, Bar and Bench reported on Thursday, December 19. This directive, particularly aimed at “sensitive matters,” has been conveyed by the High Court’s Registrar General through a written communication.

“In the interest of security of Hon’ble Judges of this Court, the correspondents be asked not to publish the names of Hon’ble Judge(s) while reporting proceedings, judgments, and orders of this Court,” the communication stated, as per sources cited by Bar & Bench.

The move comes in the wake of a recent incident where a person snatched the weapon of a High Court judge’s personal security officer (PSO) and used it to take his own life at the Golden Temple in Amritsar this September. The High Court took suo motu cognisance of the tragedy and ordered enhanced security measures for the judge involved, including the removal of Punjab Police from his security detail.

While the media communication does not explicitly reference this incident, it underscores growing concerns about the safety of judicial officers. The Division Bench, led by Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Anil Kshetarpal, had earlier taken steps to bolster security protocols following the incident.

The High Court’s appeal highlights the delicate balance between ensuring judicial transparency and safeguarding the personal security of judges in sensitive cases.
