Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio are training a new “Karate Kid,” 40 years since the original movie came out.
“Karate Kid: Legends” released its official trailer on Tuesday evening.
The upcoming film follows kung fu prodigy Li Fong (played by newcomer Ben Wang) from Beijing moves to New York City with his mother after a family tragedy.
When a new friend needs his help, Li enters a karate competition but his skills alone are not enough. His kung fu teacher Mr. Han (Jackie Chan) enlists original Karate Kid Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) for help.
Mr. Han tells Daniel in the trailer, “Li needs to be what you meant to Sensei Miyagi.”
“Karate Kid: Legends” was announced in 2023. Macchio and Chan shared that there were global auditions for the next Karate Kid.
“The Karate Kid,” both the 1984 original and the 2010 remake, follows main characters Daniel and Dre (Jaden Smith). They are both outcasts who learn martial arts from unlikely mentors to defend themselves from bullies. The films’ climax feature them battling the bullies in an intense tournament.
“The Karate Kid” also has a sequel series “Cobra Kai,” which follows Daniel and his bully Johnny (William Zabka) decades after the first film. —Nika Roque/JCB, GMA Integrated News
