Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs stated that an initial inspection found no signs of injuries or violence. Local media, citing police sources, reported that the victims died due to carbon monoxide poisoning.
The Indian mission confirmed that all 12 victims were Indian nationals, whereas the Georgian ministry stated that 11 were foreigners and one was a Georgian citizen. The victims, all employees of the same Indian restaurant, were discovered in bedrooms located on the second floor of the establishment.
“Mission has just learned about the death of 12 Indian nationals in Gudauri, Georgia. Deepest condolences to the bereaved families. Mission is in touch with the local authorities to get details of the Indian nationals who lost their lives. All possible assistance will be given,” read a statement from the Indian mission.
Authorities have launched an investigation under Article 116 of Georgia’s Criminal Code, which pertains to negligent manslaughter. Preliminary findings suggest that a power generator, placed in a closed indoor area near the bedrooms, was turned on, likely after the power supply failed on Friday night.
A forensic medical examination has been ordered to determine the precise cause of death. Investigative procedures are ongoing, with forensic experts working at the scene and interviews being conducted with individuals connected to the case.
