Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Noida schools shift to online classes amid severe pollution levels
Amid rising pollution levels and plummeting air quality index, the Delhi government has ordered the closure of schools till further notice.

On November 17, the AAP government ordered the suspension of physical classes for students up to class IX and XI. But as the national capital remains choked, in-person classes are suspended for classes X and XII from November 19.

Chief Minister Atishi said in a post on X, “From tomorrow physical classes shall be suspended for Class 10 and 12 as well, and all studies will be shifted online.”

The Directorate of Education, too, issued a circular directing the heads of government and private schools to discontinue the classes for all students, including classes 10 and 12.

“All heads of government, government-aided, and unaided private recognised schools under the DoE, MCD, NDMC, and DCB are hereby directed to discontinue physical classes for all students of all classes including class X and class XII until further orders,” the DoE stated in a circular.

Even Delhi University (DU) and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) have shifted their classes online.

DU will hold online classes till November 23 and JNU till November 22. The decision comes as the air quality in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) reached “alarmingly high” levels.

The schedule of exams and interviews, however, remains unchanged, the universities said.

Gurugram

Gurugram Deputy Commissioner Ajay Kumar also ordered the closure of schools up to class V from November 19 until further orders.

An official statement said pollution levels in some areas were found to be in the “very poor” category, while it touched the “severe” category in some other parts.

“Therefore, in the interest of the health and safety of children, all classes up to 5th standard will remain closed in all areas (urban and rural) of Gurugram district from November 19 till further orders.

“For students above class 5, online teaching will be conducted in place of physical classes at all government and private schools of the district,” the order read.

Noida and Ghaziabad

The district administrations of Ghaziabad and Gautam Buddh Nagar (Noida) have ordered the suspension of physical classes till Class 12 in all schools.

“All schools of the District Gautam Buddh Nagar are directed to adhere to action enlisted under Stage IV of the Graded Response Action Plan. Accordingly, it is directed that all schools shall discontinue physical classes from Pre-School to Class 12 till November 23 and conduct classes in online mode only,” District Magistrate Manish Kumar Verma said in an order.

Ghaziabad District Magistrate Indra Vikram Singh issued similar instructions. “All schools from Class 1 to Class 12 in Ghaziabad will remain closed for offline classes and will operate exclusively in online mode until further notice,” Singh said.
