Sensex and Nifty slumped in early trade declining 950 points and 300 points, respectively, or over a percent each on December 13, which is also Friday The Thirteenth jinx. This is the second time in 2024 that the so-called ‘unlucky’ or superstitions day has occurred.

But has Friday the 13th always spooked the stock markets in India? Not really, the trend over the past seven years shows that the Nifty 50 trend remained largely flattish, except in 2020 and 2021 when the blue chip index actually gained 3.8% and 1%, not declined, thus negating the superstition.

In the past 10 sessions that fell on Friday, the 13th, Nifty 50 ended lower in only three. However, today, all sectors were in the red with losses ranging between a percent to over two percent.

As of 11:37 am, Nifty 50 and Sensex recoverd from their lows and were trading nearly a percent lower.

What’s Friday, the 13th superstition all about? It’s a combination of Triskaidekaphobia and Paraskevidekatriaphobia, the fear of number 13 and and the fear of Friday the 13th.

For centuries, the notion of misfortunes associated with Friday, the 13th have taken over the world. The enigma dates back to legends, folklores, interpretations of mythological occurrences, and some true events.

One such is the novel ‘Friday, the Thirteenth’, written by Thomas Lawson. It’s about a broker who chooses a day to spur a panic on Wall Street.

Another one is a Biblical reference to unlucky Fridays. Bible’s first man and first woman Adam and Eve are said to have eaten the forbidden Apple on a Friday. Adam’s son Cain murdered his brother Abel on a Friday. Noah’s ark set sail in the Great Flood on a Friday. And the Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem was also toppled on a Friday. Unlucky Fridays, indeed.

Also, according to Dan Brown’s 2003 novel “The Da Vinci Code, officers of King Philip IV of France arrested hundreds of members of the Knights Templar, a Catholic military order, on Friday, October 13, 1307.

Among other real life incidents that took place on this day include, the German bombing of Buckingham Palace in 1940, the murder of Kitty Genovese (a crime that pushed the emergency 911 system into place) in New York in 1964, a cyclone killed more than 3,00,000 people in Bangladesh in 1970, the death of rapper Tupac Shakur in September 1996, and the crash of the Costa Concordia cruise ship off the coast of Italy that killed 30 people in 2012

Meanwhile, Paganism associates Fridays and the number 13 with good fortune. According to Pagans, Friday has a unique association with the divine feminine and is a lucky day for marriage.
