“We have called back the ‘jatha’ for today given the injuries suffered by a few farmers,” farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher said. He added that farmer bodies, the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha will decide the next course of action after a meeting.
A ‘jatha’ of 101 farmers began its foot march to Delhi from their protest site at the Shambhu border at 1 pm but was stopped a few metres away by multilayered barricading erected by Haryana security personnel. Prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) were imposed at the Sambhu border.
Let’s take a look at their demands:
- Legal guarantee for minimum support price of crops
- Farm debt waiver
- Pension for farmers and farm labourers
- No hike in electricity tariff
- Withdrawal of police cases (against farmers)
- “Justice” for the victims of the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence
- Reinstatement of the Land Acquisition Act, 2013
- Compensation to the families of farmers who died during the previous agitation in 2020-21
