IBLA 2024 | Increased competition will act as a catalyst for innovation in quick commerce: Blinkit’s Albinder Dhindsa

As the quick commerce industry experiences growing competition, with giants like Amazon and other new entrants scrambling to meet the rising demand for faster deliveries, Albinder Dhindsa, founder of Blinkit, sees the surge in rivalry as a driving force for innovation. He believes that heightened competition encourages businesses to think outside the box and deliver better solutions to consumers.

Speaking with CNBC-TV18 at the India Business Leader Awards Red Carpet in Mumbai on Friday, December 7, 2024, Dhindsa shared his optimistic outlook on the evolving sector.

“A lot of the innovation happens when there is more competition. Everybody is trying to think of better things to do. When the space has a lot of conviction from a lot of people, you have to do better things for the customers to stand out. So I think it will be a good innovative phase because everybody will be trying to put their best foot forward, and I think a lot of innovation will happen in this space because of that,” he said.

Dhindsa also highlighted the significant room for growth in the quick commerce sector. Unlike more saturated markets such as food delivery, which is dominated by a few major players, he believes that the broader scope of quick commerce will support multiple successful companies. “I think as an industry it can and will support a lot of players,” Dhindsa asserted. “It’s hard to predict how the space will evolve, but I feel that there are going to be a lot of players, some specialising in certain areas. This is a very large space compared to food delivery, so it should be able to support multiple successful companies.”

As quick commerce continues to diversify, various sectors are experimenting with ultra-fast delivery models. Fashion, for instance, has embraced 30-minute deliveries, with platforms like Myntra tapping into this trend. Dhindsa noted that Blinkit is not limited to grocery deliveries and is expanding its offerings into a variety of categories for quick commerce.

“At Blinkit, we will try with almost every category out there. The success of these categories depends on execution and consumer insights. Ultimately, it’s the consumers who decide what they want faster and what they don’t,” Dhindsa remarked.

He also outlined key categories Blinkit is focusing on as part of its growth strategy. These include beauty, electronics, and fashion—sectors with significant potential for success within the quick commerce model. Blinkit is scaling its efforts in these areas and constantly innovating to provide customers with the best possible experience, from enhanced product offerings to improved delivery efficiency.

Dhindsa’s comments underscore his belief that, while the quick commerce landscape is still evolving, the intense competition will only drive more creativity and growth, ultimately benefiting the consumer.
