Digitalisation plugged leakages worth ₹3 lakh crore in PDS, says Pralhad Joshi

The Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD) had earlier said that it had made efforts in the first 100 days of the current government’s tenure, achieving major milestones across its four focus areas: digitalisation of operations, modernisation of storage and logistics, transforming Fair Price Shops (FPS) and strengthening institutions under the department.

In his statement on Thursday, Joshi also highlighted that India is providing free ration valued at 2.20 lakh crore every month to a population twice the size of the European Union.

The Central government has extended the free ration scheme for 80 crore poor people of the country till 2028.

Currently under the scheme, the beneficiaries receive food grains every month at a nominal price of  1-3 per kilogram. The monthly quantity of food grains has been defined as per the categories mandated under the provision of the NFSA Act.

The food security scheme, Pradhan Mantri Gariba Kalyan Anna Yojana, was launched in April 2020 and it was last extended in February 2023.

Addressing concerns raised by a state Chief Minister over pending payments by the Food Ministry since 2017, Joshi today also assured that such issues would be resolved with the introduction of the “Anna Chakra.”
