Mumbai wakes up to thick smog: AQI remains ‘moderate’ at 144
Residents in Mumbai woke up to a thick layer of smog on Monday, November 18, and the air quality remained in the ‘moderate’ category. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the AQI of Mumbai was at 144 at 10 a.m. on Monday.

On X, news agency ANI shared visuals from Bandra Kurla Complex and Bandra Reclamation areas covered in smog on Monday morning.

As per the CPCB, the AQI in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) was 144, Borivali East 170, Sewri 187 and Worli 119 — all under the ‘moderate’ category. Several places, including Siddharth Nagar-Worli, registered an AQI of 220 and Malad West 221, across the city recorded an AQI into the ‘poor’ category.

Various parts of the city also recorded an AQI under the ‘satisfactory’ category. At 10 am, the AQI in Borivali East was at 90 and Khindipada-Bhandup West at 95.

As per the CPCB data, the air quality index from 0 to 50 is considered ‘good,’ 51 to 100 is ‘satisfactory,’ 101 to 200 is ‘moderate,’ 201 to 300 is ‘poor,’ 301 to 400 is ‘very poor,’ and from 401 to 500 is under the ‘severe’ category.

The air quality under the ‘poor’ category can lead to breathing discomfort for most people on prolonged exposure. The AQI under the ‘moderate’ category can lead to breathing discomfort for people with asthma and heart diseases and AQI in the ‘satisfactory’ category can cause minor breathing discomfort for sensitive people.

According to the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR), the air quality is likely to be in the ‘moderate’ category on November 18 and November 19.

The Regional Meteorological Centre, Mumbai, said that haze during morning hours and mainly clear sky in the afternoon and evening on November 18. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 34 degrees Celsius and 23 degrees Celsius.
