I know that some of the best Wordle players look down on ADIEU as a starter word. (Some of my own family members do!) But I like it. I prefer to solve the vowels first. It feels more manageable given that there are so many more consonants. And my dad was a high school French teacher, so I enjoy adding a little French to my mornings.
After starting with ADIEU, I often try a second word that includes an O along with a couple common consonants, like R, S or T. If I have discovered only one vowel after the second guess, I frequently include Y in the third.
I play Wordle in the midmorning as a quick break from work. I don’t worry much about minimizing the number of guesses I need. I care almost as much about minimizing the amount of time I need to solve the puzzle. But I do usually add one restriction to make it harder: I guess only those words that could be a solution to the puzzle.
When it came time to make my second guess on today’s puzzle, I was slightly stumped. I couldn’t quickly think of a second word that included both A and O as well as more than one of the letters R, S or T. Instead, I went with MANOR. When it proved to be a fairly lucky guess, I next tried to think of words that begin with MAR. Normally, I’d turn toward Y at this point, but MARCH popped into my head, and my good fortune continued. That’s one of the reasons to guess words that can be solutions: Sometimes, you get very lucky.
I give this Wordle five stars: I had fun with the puzzle and, as a bonus, it reminded me of John Lewis’s wonderful graphic memoir of the same name.
Today’s word is MARCH. According to Webster’s New World College Dictionary, it’s a verb that means to walk with steady, regular strides.
