SAGINAW, MI — A Michigan-made ice cream shop that got its start in Bay City is expanding into the Saginaw market.
A new Michigan Cream & Sugar Ice Cream Co. location is slated to open this summer on Hamilton Street in Old Town Saginaw, according to signs posted in the storefront’s windows.
Cream & Sugar’s original location can be found at 160 Uptown Drive in Bay City and is reopening for the 2024 season on Wednesday, March 6.
Last year, after the Saginaw Downtown Development Authority had applied for and was awarded a $25,000 Match on Main grant for the ice cream shop’s potential second location, Cream & Sugar Manager Tim Mangan said the company was “studying opening a location in Old Town Saginaw.”
Now, plans are officially moving forward. Mangan said demolition inside the space has begun, and the new store is expected to open late this summer. The exact opening date is to be determined.
“While anticipation grows for our new scoop shop and production facility, Saginaw may see Michigan Cream & Sugar scooping our flavors at a few community events throughout the summer,” Mangan said. “We look forward to bringing Michigan Cream & Sugar to Saginaw in 2024.”
Cream & Sugar is known for its ice cream made with locally-sourced ingredients and its freshly-made bubble waffle cones. Ice cream flavors listed on the Cream & Sugar website include a few with Bay County-inspired names, such as Bay City Brown ‘E,’ Michigan Sugar Cookie and Uptown Funk.
