Once we become invested in a show like Virgin River, there’s no going back. It’s both wholesome and dramatic, having us smiling ear-to-ear while also keeping us on our toes with its riveting plot. We eagerly await every new season drop, and inevitably long for the next one as we binge-watch the entire thing in a day or two. This is precisely why we’re pretty happy that Netflix has not only begun the production for Virgin River season 6, but also announced plans for a prequel series, according to a report from Deadline!
Yes, you’re allowed to cheer, because we certainly did too. We’ll give you a few moments before we ask that things get brought down a notch—because there are a few things worth noting.
For one, the idea of a Virgin River prequel series is still in development, meaning that it has not officially been ordered yet.
However, if it were to come into fruition, Deadline reports that the series would follow the origin love story of Mel’s biological parents.
Those who’ve watched Virgin River know that Mel’s mother, Sarah, passed away when Mel was a child. Her biological father’s identity longed remained a mystery, but was finally revealed to be a man named Everett (which we found out in the latter half of season 5).
Sarah and Everett are said to also have met in the beautiful town of Virgin River (does this make them the original Virgin River couple?). The potential prequel series will explore how the two sparked a romance, and what ultimately went wrong in the end.
We may get a taste of what’s to come in season 6, with Deadline stating that there will be more information revealed about Everett now that we know who he is—including flashbacks of a younger version of him and Sarah.
Casting for these two young characters is reportedly underway… and we can’t wait to see just who they are!
There is no confirmed premiere date for the prequel series; however, Virgin River season 6 is confirmed to premiere at some point in 2025.
