Intel vPro for Meteor Lake, but not for Raptor Lake Refresh
Intel has traditionally released an update to its business laptop series known as ‘vPro’ at MWC. This year was no different and there is a new product update focusing on the most recent CPU series called Core Ultra 100 or Meteor Lake.
Over the last few years, Intel has shifted its approach with vPro technologies, moving away from physical changes to the chips to software locking. The decision of which products will support these technologies now rests with Intel. In the case of the latest CPU architecture, the Core Ultra 100 CPUs, the company has officially stated that all SKUs within this series will support vPro feature set, categorized into Enterprise and Essential tiers.
What’s equally important from Intel’s today announcement is that none of the recently launched 14th Gen Core “Raptor Lake Refresh” processors will support vPro, none of the mobile variants at least. For users seeking to leverage these features, the recommendation is to explore the new Core Ultra laptops. To simplify, only the Meteor Lake-U and -H series are compatible with vPro.
The exclusivity of vPro to Core Ultra applies exclusively to the mobile sector. On the desktop front, Intel is set to broaden vPro technology support to the 14th Gen series. But this is not surprising given the absence of the Meteor Lake-S desktop series (those were canceled). Plans might have taken a different turn had the Meteor Lake-S series not been axed.
Looking ahead to 2024, Intel is focusing in on vPro’s role in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its diverse applications. The company is actively promoting new AI experiences tailored for everyday activities, such as group collaborations, productivity, security, content creation, and accessibility. The integration of AI assistance has demonstrated significant success across these various domains.
Intel has announced an extensive lineup of over 100 designs tailored for enterprises and businesses within the series. In the competitive arena, these series are positioned against the AMD Ryzen PRO series, boasting a smaller number of design wins.
When it comes to desktops, Intel is set to introduce vPro technologies selectively across specific SKUs. This includes the 4 Core T-Series (35W), 4 Core-S (65W) variants, and 3 Core-S (125W) models.
