BURTON, MI — Burton’s culinary scene has welcomed a new addition with the opening of Sabor Street Tacos, a Mexican restaurant promising an authentic taste similar to the streets of Jalisco.
Sabor is located at 4021 E. Atherton Road, which was previously occupied by El Poco Loco, a taco restaurant that closed last year.
The restaurant owner, Gregorio Leon, is dedicated to bring the same authentic food that his home state of Jalisco offers.
“That’s what we’re focused on,” he said.
Leon also owns El Potrero, which has five area locations in Flint, Grand Blanc, Swartz Creek, Mt. Morris and Owosso.
He’s been working in restaurants for most of his life, learning the best practices and making them better at his own spots.
Leon’s favorite item on the menu — which he believes will be a top seller — is the Huarache.
The Huarache consists of a flat masa topped with beans, lettuce, Pico de Gallo, sour cream and Queso fresco (Mexican crumbling cheese).
The menu also includes tacos, burritos, enchiladas, tamales and quesabirrias.
“It’s a small menu, but everything we offer is also our favorite,” Leon said.
He opened Sabor in Burton because he lives in the city, and it will primarily be a takeout restaurant.
“The food is cooked from scratch,” Leon said. “It’s not going to be as fast like Taco Bell, but it’s cooked instantly.”
The word “sabor” means “flavor” in English.
“We wanted to try something different and offer treats from the streets of Mexico, stuff you can only buy from corners and takeout places over there,” he said.
Business hours for Sabor are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. on the weekend.
