A Durham police cruiser wound up inside a downtown restaurant after a two-vehicle crash on Thursday.
The crash occurred shortly before 12 p.m., at the intersection of Mangum and Morgan streets. A Durham police cruiser and white minivan were involved with the police car eventually crashing into a nearby restaurant.
Based on a preliminary investigation, police believe the minivan hit the officer’s vehicle, causing the officer to crash into the building. The hood of the cruiser was propped up after going through the window.
The driver of the minivan, Lisa Camargo-Cruz, 48, was charged with no insurance and a red light violation.
The intersection was blocked off to traffic into Thursday afternoon. An ambulance left the scene with both drivers around 12:15 p.m. The police department said the officer was not on his way to a call when the crash happened.
The driver of the police car and driver of the minivan are believed to have non-life-threatening injuries. A child and woman riding in the minivan were also injured, but both were treated at the scene and expected to recover.
The restaurant, Indian Monsoon, was open at the time. No one inside was hurt and the restaurant will be back open for dinner.
This is a developing story.
