As the cover star of British Vogue January 2024, actor Emma Watson shared 5 of her favorite cocktails to highlight in Vogue’s “Ultimate British Taste Test” video series. The first cocktail she shared is an EatingWell favorite: the timeless espresso martini. And Watson’s version—which she fittingly calls Emma’s Espresso Martini—adds a sweet twist to the classic cocktail: chocolate.
“I like sweet things, and I’m going to put a tiny bit of salt in there as well,” Watson says in the video. The salty-candied combo is rather simple to shake up. Here’s how to make it at home.
First, Watson chills her serving glass by filling it with ice cubes, admitting that she only found out the importance of chilling the glass ahead of time.
She then pours 1 ounce of espresso, 1 ounce of simple syrup and 1.5 ounces of vodka into her cocktail shaker. This is where Watson adds her special touch—about 1 ounce of cocoa liqueur and a pinch of salt—into the shaker before scooping in her ice and sealing it.
“Shaking, it comes from the heart, everyone,” Watson says before shaking up her martini. “It’s a full body movement.”
Once ready, Watson removed the ice that was chilling the glass before pouring in her strained chocolate espresso martini. She garnished the cocktail with three coffee beans on top.
“One is for health, one is for wealth and one is for happiness,” Watson exclaims, placing each bean on the surface of the drink. That’s all it takes, and it’s ready to serve or enjoy.
This easy cocktail took less than 10 minutes, uses just 5 ingredients and has a stunning appearance for a classy night in. It’s a chocolatey version of our own Espresso Martini recipe—just replace the coffee liqueur with cocoa liqueur.
