A group of health experts have ranked the best weight loss diet for this year, as this popular regimen doesn’t require a calorie counter.
Leading health experts from U.S News have named WeightWatchers as the best weight loss diet of 2024, with a perfect score of 100. The panel of experts, which includes dietitians and doctors who specialise in heart health, diabetes and weight loss, reviewed each of the diets specifically on safe and effective weight loss.
The Mediterranean Diet was ranked second on this list, which focuses on quality of food and lifestyle, rather than a single food group. Foods like fresh fruit and veggies, as well as wholegrains, lentils, oil and fish are the main groups you would be eating in this diet, with processed foods and red meat to be avoided.
In third place on the list is the volumetric diet, which categorises food into four groups based on its calorie density. People are encouraged to eat more low-calorie foods, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy products.
Read on below to find out more about 2024’s best diet and how you can follow WeightWatchers to stay healthy and happy in the New Year.
What is WeightWatchers (WW)?
According to U.S News, WeightWatchers – also known as WW – is a diet that focuses on lasting weight loss through a change in behaviour, nutrition science and support from peers. The diet encourages people to develop better habits, move more and eat healthier.
The diet company offers support and advice via its app, as well as virtual and in-person workshops.
How does the WW diet work?
WeightWatchers helps its members lose weight and keep the pounds off by changing the person’s relationship with food. While you are not restricted to certain foods, and there is no calorie counting, WW looks at the food’s nutritional factors to create a single number – the Points value.
WW bases the Points system on the approach that all foods you eat can fit into a diet that helps you lose weight, as long as you stay within your allotment of Points for the day and week. Like many other diets, WW takes your age, height and weight into consideration when creating your Points total, and exercising throughout the week can increase your weekly number of points.
By using the WW app, you can figure out how many Points are in your meals, and keep track of them by adding them into the app. The company offers thousands of recipes, each with a Points value, and you can find the point values for more than 355,000 foods on the mobile app.
There are also thousands of zero Point foods, which you can stock up on if you are feeling hungry but don’t want to put your diet in jeopardy. However, it is not sustainable to just eat zero Point foods, it’s actually better to use up all your Points for the day.
Some zero Point foods include:
- Fruit.
- Non-starchy vegetables.
- Beans.
- Poultry.
- Eggs.
- Popcorn.
- Fat-free yogurt.
Overall, no foods are off limits. You can eat whatever you want – provided you stick to your Points budget.
