Holiday Travel Weather Through New Year’s Day

Holiday t​ravel weather conditions could be a bit tricky in parts of the Midwest, East and West Coast the next few days, but New Year’s weather impact should be pretty minimal.

M​ore than 115 million people in the U.S. are expected to travel at least 50 miles during the holidays, according to the annual prediction from AAA. That’s the second-highest number since AAA started making projections 23 years ago.

W​ith that in mind, here are some key highlights about the forecast for those traveling by road or air followed by our day-by-day look at the forecast maps.

K​ey Highlights

-​ Some patchy light snow will move through parts of the Midwest, Ohio and Tennessee valleys, then into the Appalachians. Some slushy roads are possible, especially over the Appalachians.

-​ Some accumulating snow, sleet and freezing rain is possible beginning Friday night and lasting into Saturday in parts of northern New England and upstate New York that could lead to slippery roads.

-​ Another round of rain and high mountain snow is expected in Washington, Oregon and California Friday into Saturday. High-elevation snow totals should be modest. Some localized flash flooding is possible in parts of Northern California particularly Friday into early Saturday.

-​ The New Year’s holiday forecast looks fairly quiet. Some light snow is possible in parts of the Appalachians and rain is likely in parts of the South and possible in parts of Southern California.
