Another Game of Thrones prequel is in talks at HBO.
Sources told Variety Monday that a new series would focus on the character Aegon I Targaryen’s conquering of Westeros.
Insiders said that HBO is looking for a writer for the show to commence with the development process of the series.
The show could also be launched by a feature film, insiders told the outlet, although plans remain unclear at this time.
The potential prequel – taking place 300 years before the Game of Thrones timeline – would detail how Aegon I and sister wives Visenya and Rhaenys deployed their troops and trio of dragons to take over six of Westeros’s seven kingdoms, except for Dorne, insiders said.
Amid the takeover, Aegon I was crowned as Westeros’s first king of the Iron Throne and the creator of the Targaryen Dynasty.
Talks of another prequel from the popular franchise comes amid the network’s efforts to produce more shows based on the source material from George R.R. Martin.
The first one to debut was the series House of the Dragon in August of 2022, getting renewed within a week of its premiere. The show’s second season is in the production stages right now.
To date, the only previous effort for a spinoff was a 2019 pilot about the Long Night featuring Naomi Watts.
The intellectual property, which is owned by Warner Bros. Discovery, remains a fertile source for new projects amid the enduring popularity of the series.
The prospective move comes as legacy media companies continue to seek to develop expanded TV and film content, with Disney and the Marvel Cinematic Universe leading the way.
