“The Joker Year One” will take over Batman comics in February, with writer Chip Zdarsky sharing a creepy new image for the upcoming event.
Chip Zdarsky has revealed new promotional art for the upcoming Batman event, “The Joker Year One.”
Fans will learn more about The Joker in a new three-part event coming on the pages of Batman #142 – #144 in February, and Zdarsky took to his newsletter to share a creepy new image he made to promote the upcoming story and tease that it “may” end up becoming a cover. The three Batman issues written by Zdarsky will feature art by Giuseppe Camuncoli, Stefano Nesi, Andrea Sorrentino, Alejandro Sánchez and Dave Stewart. “It takes place in two time periods: the period directly after The Joker’s creation in the chemical vat, and some time in the future as Batman tries to unravel a mystery,” Zdarsky teased. “It’s been fun attempting to dance between the raindrops of continuity on this one!” Earlier this month, DC released previews of interior art and covers for the three issues, the first of which is set to release on Feb. 6.

The Joker Year One Looks at the Clown Prince of Crime’s Early Days
“The Joker Year One” will tell the tale of the leader of the Red Hood Gang meeting a tragic ‘death’ in a vat of chemicals — as the man who walks away from the catastrophe takes on the moniker of The Joker. The comics are described as taking a look at the “heartbreaking and gruesome tale” of the Joker following the explosion, while also having another story set afterward that shows how much of a long-lasting and terrifying impact the Joker has on his nemesis, Batman — who will be getting a special Black Label series that looks at his earlier days early next year.
The mini-event will continue in Batman #143 as The Joker runs into a figure from Batman’s past and the Red Hood Gang unites once more to cause havoc in Gotham. The three-part event will come to a close in Batman #144 with a climactic conclusion when The Red Hood Gang goes on a rampage, with the issue’s teaser saying that ‘only The Joker can stop them’. Also in the concluding issue, Batman faces a new virus devastating Gotham in “a future where The Joker looms over everything.”
“The Joker Year One” begins with Batman #142, on sale Feb. 6 from DC Comics.
