It also boasted a feature film and a TV movie. The franchise revolves around the young Arnold Shortman, a little boy who lives with his grandparents and enjoys countless adventures with his friends. Every official depiction of Arnold so far has featured him in animation.

Arnold appears as a normal boy with a head that no longer appears vaguely football-shaped. Helga’s hair is also much shorter, and Arnold happens to look somewhat like Bart Simpson. Grandpa Phil is the most bizarre depiction, as he retains his comically large nose on an otherwise typical human body, creating an eerie and downright horrifying effect.
Could A Live Action Hey Arnold! Adaptation Work?
The major problem with a Hey Arnold! adaptation is that it has been nearly 20 years since the show ended. Regardless of how it was revived, a generation has come and gone between the height of the show’s popularity and today. If it was to be revived, it would need to rebuild its popularity for a younger audience or else appeal largely to nostalgic viewers. These children grew up with the Disney Channel’s Phineas and Ferb rather than Hey Arnold!, and may have little connection to Hey Arnold! and other shows like it.

Live-action adaptations of classic children’s content also run the risk of stripping away the bright and bubbly atmosphere that makes them great. That does not mean that suitable adaptations are impossible. Barbie managed to prove that animated content can effectively translate to live-action for both older audiences and modern viewers. Arnold may look little like himself, but his personality and relationships can remain strong.
Success with younger audiences is also possible. In 2017, Hey Arnold!: The Jungle Movie brought Arnold and his friends back with ease. The movie proved to be a critical success, earning a Primetime Emmy and serious acclaim. It has only been five years since that revival, so syndicating old episodes and the movie could bring it back to life for a new audience. As long as Grandpa Phil looks slightly less terrifying, a live-action Hey Arnold! can succeed.
