Washington Commanders defensive tackle Jonathan Allen expressed his frustration with his team’s lack of success in recent years following a 14-7 loss to the New York Giants on Sunday. Here’s what you need to know:
- The two-time Pro Bowler told members of the media he is “f—ing tired of this s—. I’m f—ing tired of this bulls—. It’s been seven f—ing years of the same shit. I’m tired of this s—.”
- The Giants finished with 356 yards of offense despite playing a backup quarterback in Tyrod Taylor behind an offensive line with a multitude of injuries. New York entered the matchup as the second-worst offense in the NFL, averaging only 265.5 yards a game.
- The Commanders dropped to 3-4 on the season while the Giants improved to 2-5.
- Allen signed a four-year, $72 million extension in July 2021. He has three sacks and 28 total tackles (15 solo) in seven games this season.
Commanders once again struggling to remain consistent
The only consistent part of the Washington Commanders’ season is inconsistency. That and allowing copious amounts of sacks.
Consider their last four games. Take the reigning NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles to overtime and then lose 40-20 at home to the previously winless Bears only to beat the Atlanta Falcons on the road. Then this.
The one-win Giants played with a patchwork offensive line, yet it was the Commanders allowing six sacks — and to a defense that had only five coming in. New York had yet to score a touchdown in the first half this season but it held a 14-0 lead at halftime.
Washington did not convert a third down until the second half and finished 1-of-15 overall.
Shoring up these issues is obviously necessary, but finding a steady level is paramount if they have hopes of making the playoffs. — Ben Standig, Commanders beat writer
What they’re saying
Commanders receiver Terry McLaurin echoed his teammate’s statement.
“It’s hard to get a consistent flow going when … you take one step forward, two steps back,” he said after the game. “You don’t handle things the right way in the game. … You’re just teeter-tottering. We’re approaching about the halfway point (of the season), so we have to be able to turn the corner and not make the same mistakes, staying ahead of the sticks, not hurting ourselves with penalties, finishing drives with touchdowns, starting faster, finishing better. The teams who are going to make those playoff push as the season goes along are the teams that figure that stuff out.”
