PlayStation Plus members in the Extra and Premium tiers get access to a bonus game this month, as Sony has added Anodyne to the catalog. PS Plus Extra and Premium subscribers get new titles every month, with Premium users getting some additional bonuses, such as the ability to play select PS1, PS2, PSP, and PS3 games.
Sony usually updates the PS Plus Extra and Premium lineups in the third week of a given month, with some games leaving the service around the same date. The final list of titles is generally announced a few days before, but games are almost never added to PS Plus without an official announcement of some sort. It looks like Anodyne is a rare exception to this rule, as it seems to have been added as a surprise bonus game.
As reported by TrueTrophies, Sony added Anodyne to the catalog of games available to PS Plus Extra and Premium users on April 4. Anodyne was not a part of the official list of games coming to PS Plus Extra in March 2023, and the lineup for April is to be revealed, so it seems like Sony shadow-dropped the game without much fanfare. Regardless, fans in the higher tiers of PlayStation Plus can download and play Anodyne at no extra cost.
For those unaware, Anodyne is a top-down action-adventure game and it features some elements from The Legend of Zelda franchise. It received fairly positive reviews upon its launch, with the PC version sitting at a score of 75 on Metacritic.
Sony added some noteworthy games to PS Plus Extra in March 2023 including Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, Immortals Fenyx Rising, Street Fighter 5 Championship Edition, and Tchia as a day one release. In addition, Premium users got access to Ridge Racer Type 4, Ape Academy 2, and Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror, but it’s strange for Anodyne to be completely absent from this list.
WWE 2K22 was similarly added to PS Plus Extra on January 3, but its inclusion was announced in December itself. Perhaps the deal to get Anodyne on PS Plus was finalized much later, and the developer didn’t want to wait for April’s monthly refresh. Regardless, PS Plus Extra and Premium users can now play Anodyne as a part of their subscription service, and it’ll be interesting to see if Sony ever decides to add more bonus games as a surprise in the future.
Anodyne is out now for mobile devices, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
