Kaiwa Sushi
Thanks to Beyond The Creek for being the first to alert us to Kaiwa Sushi’s closure after what we believe to be 18 years in business in Walnut Creek, possibly more, though the website is already down and online history is slim. (As Beyond The Creek summed up, and as many locals feel, it had been around “as long as I can remember.”) The small, cheerful, tidy restaurant and sushi bar was a favorite for affordable fresh fish and bento boxes, and will be missed. Kaiwa Sushi was at 1534 Locust St. in Walnut Creek.
Quince Cafe & Grill
Longtime Quince Cafe fans, it’s time to say goodbye. The wee, cheerful cafe and grill, purveyor of fresh breakfast and lunch fare on San Pablo Avenue since 2009, has closed for good. For those who aren’t regulars — Quince Cafe had been dormant since 2019, thanks to a truck crash that took out most of its kitchen infrastructure (and then the pandemic, which made repairs difficult). Despite the darkened space, locals refused to give up hope, and back in 2021, owner Shiryn Shalileh was optimistic that a reopening was imminent. Late last week, however, What NowSF posted news that new Thai dessert shop Rosa La Moon will take over the eatery, and the old Quince signage might be painted over soon. So long for good this time, burgers, sandwiches, Jordanian omelets and challah French toast. Quince Cafe & Grill was at 2228 San Pablo Ave. in Berkeley.
