Dakota Johnson is reflecting on Madame Web coming up short and the bright side she sees with the unfortunate situation.
After its Valentine’s Day release in theaters, Madame Web fell far short of its studio expectations. Along with bombing at the box office, it was also met with harsh reviews, garnering a Rotten Tomatoes score that was lower than Morbius. In a new interview with Bustle, star Dakota Johnson admitted that she wasn’t surprised by the reaction. She clarified that the film fell victim to “committees” getting involved, suggesting this had a negative effect on the “art” created by the filmmakers.
Hideo Kojima Goes Viral With Madame Web Reaction
Hideo Kojima’s mini-review of Madame Web has gone viral on social media.
“Unfortunately, I’m not surprised that this has gone down the way it has,” Johnson said. “In these big movies that get made, decisions are being made by committees, and art does not do well when it’s made by committee[s]. Films are made by a filmmaker and a team of artists around them. You cannot make art based on numbers and algorithms. My feeling has been for a long time that audiences are extremely smart, and executives have started to believe that they’re not. Audiences will always be able to sniff out bullsh*t.”
On seeing the bright side, she added, “But it was definitely an experience for me to make that movie. I had never done anything like it before. I probably will never do anything like it again because I don’t make sense in that world. And I know that now. But sometimes in this industry, you sign on to something, and it’s one thing and then as you’re making it, it becomes a completely different thing, and you’re like, Wait, what? But it was a real learning experience, and of course, it’s not nice to be a part of something that’s ripped to shreds, but I can’t say that I don’t understand.”

Dakota Johnson Says She Can’t “Fake” It
Dakota Johnson also touched on the press tour for Madame Web. Commenting on how some of the comments she’d made about the movie went viral, Johnson noted, “All that stuff is ridiculous. It’s hard for me to fake it. It’s hard for me sometimes to go along with the silliness of doing a press tour.”
Madame Web serves as an origin story for the Marvel character, and the film is a part of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, following the Venom movies and Morbius. SJ Clarkson directed the movie and co-wrote the script with Matt Sazama, Burk Sharpless, and Clarie Parker. Along with Dakota Johnson in the lead role, the film also stars Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, Celeste O’Connor, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, Emma Roberts, and Adam Scott.
