Fans fume as Tommy Hilfiger says women should ‘never’ wear baggy jeans

Fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger has sparked a social media uproar by saying he doesn’t like seeing women in baggy jeans.

The 72-year-old shared his views at the Old Bags luncheon in Palm Beach, Florida, where his wife Dee Ocleppo Hilfiger was being honored for her work in fashion and charity.

He said: “I think they look terrible on women. I want to see something form-fitting on a woman’s frame.”

His comments have angered many fashion lovers who took to X to voice their opinions. One person wrote: “I hate seeing him without a bag over his head.

This isn’t the first time Tommy has faced criticism. In 2015, model Gigi Hadid made her big break walking in the Tommy Hilfiger autumn/winter show during New York Fashion Week.

Hadid, who was just 19 and garnered many eyeballs as she strutted on the runway wearing a poncho in red, white and blue. Recalling this, Tommy said to Yahoo!: “Our casting director said, ‘She doesn’t really fit because, you know, she’s not quite as tall as the other girls, she’s not quite as thin.’ So they put a red, white and blue poncho on her.”

“It covered a lot of her body unfortunately, but it received millions of hits so I said why don’t we ask her to design a line for us.” Some folks were upset by these words and said that Tommy was being unkind about Gigi’s body.

Gigi, however, was quite reasonable and understandable in response to his comments. Speaking to Access Hollywood, she said: “It’s funny because people think it’s something that I wasn’t aware of. Possibly back in the day that would’ve gone through my mind, but I know when Tommy said it last week that it was in context of a larger story that wasn’t shown in that video.”

“The point of that story was that Tommy was rooting for me and that above all, regardless of what the stylist for that season said or what he put me in, Tommy wanted me in the show and Tommy was pushing for me and Tommy loved my curves. The next season I wore a bikini on the same runway, with the same stylist that had previously put me in a poncho.”
