CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – A Lowcountry woman is being recognized for her commitment to practicing and supporting the arts in South Carolina.
Diane Frankenberger was awarded the individual award by the Governor’s Award for the Arts by the South Carolina Arts Commission.
The commission celebrated Frankenberger’s commitment to inspiring and assisting anyone interested in working with textiles calling her a “powerhouse of wisdom, knowledge, discernment, passion, and humility.”
Frankenberger transformed the old Summerville Town Post Office into a nonprofit community art center that welcomes more than 25,000 people yearly.
She also owns People, Places, and Quilts which has been named one of the top 10 quilt shops in North America.
The commission said Frankenberger’s “impact on the arts, for the state of South Carolina and beyond, is immeasurable.”
The commission also recognized Campbell Walker Frost, Jr., of Columbia, with the Lifetime Achievement award; Dr. Minuette Floyd, of Columbia, with the Arts in Education award; and the South Carolina Philharmonic in the organization category.
“Through their unwavering dedication, talent, and commitment, this year’s recipients exemplify the very essence of South Carolina’s artistic spirit. Their contributions not only enrich our cultural landscape but also ensure that the arts are accessible to all. The Governor’s Award is a testament to their exceptional achievements and a sincere appreciation for their invaluable role in shaping and enhancing life and culture across our state,” SCAC Executive Director David Platts said.
