Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender adaptation received its debut Rotten Tomatoes score.
Avatar: The Last Airbender’s first season debuted on Feb. 22 on Netflix. It currently sits with a critics’ score of 60%, just barely making its “fresh.” The live-action adaptation fared much better with audiences, as it currently holds an audience approval rating of 75%. The mixed score falls far short of matching the perfect 100% score of the original animated series, which holds a 98% audience score. M. Night Shyamalan’s feature film adaptation, released in 2010, has a 5% score with critics and a 30% audience score.

The Reviews for Avatar: The Last Airbender Are Mixed
A positive review from Consequence critic Jonah Krueger reads, “Is it as good as the original series? Not really, but was it ever going to be? The more important question is this: Was there merit in undertaking such a project? To that, the answer is a resounding yes. More than merely pleasant, Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender offers an enjoyable mix of nostalgia and new ideas, fusing the novelty of seeing elemental bending in ‘real life’ with the excitement of an evolving, worthwhile story. Come for the flashy adaptation of your favorite fight scene, and stay for a new take on the story that won over your heart in the first place.”
A negative review from AV Club critic Jenna Sherer stated, “In the end, it’s hard to say who this version of Avatar is for, exactly. Fans of the original will be disappointed with the show’s charmless, uncanny-valley riff on the world they know and love. Newcomers may be put off in general. There’s an argument to be made for live-action versions of beloved animated series; Netflix’s own One Piece, for example, is a rollicking remix of the classic anime that gleefully embraces its cartoonishness. Avatar: The Last Airbender tries so hard to heft the weight of its legacy that it ends up sweating bullets.”

Like the animated show, the series is set in a war-torn realm, drawing inspiration from various Asian and Indigenous American cultures. Certain individuals possess the ability to “bend” one of the four classical elements: water, earth, fire, or air. Aang, revered as the Avatar and the sole surviving Airbender, serves as the conduit between the mortal and spirit realms. Unlike others, he possesses the extraordinary ability to manipulate all four elements, thus upholding harmony in the world. Now faced with the daunting task of thwarting the aggressive ambitions of the militaristic Fire Nation, whose aim is world domination, Aang must embrace his role as the peacemaker.
