Emma Watson Broke Out the Spring Shoe That Instantly Makes Any Outfit Cooler

Maybe this is wishful thinking, but I believe we’re finally approaching the end of winter. My evidence? Stars have started ditching their heavy-duty winter boots for spring-ready alternatives. Katie Holmes and Gigi Hadid slipping into sleek loafers was my first sign, and this week, Emma Watson offered a second.

While in Milan for fashion week, the actress stepped out in a look that was timeless, preppy, and perfectly on trend; of course, I immediately wanted to recreate it. Watson’s Prada-focused outfit featured classic straight-leg jeans, a blue-and-white striped button-down, trench coat — this season’s hottest layering piece — and a camel-colored sweater draped over her shoulders. While I want everything from her spring-perfect look, it was her chunky black Prada loafers my eyes were immediately drawn to.

Dream Pairs Chunky Loafers

Loafers are my version of the groundhog not seeing his shadow. They’re a sign spring is in the air, because, to me at least, the classic shoes are the warm-weather version of a boot: outfit elevating but still practical. There are a range of styles you can reach for, including flat, streamlined silhouettes, sky-high, and sweet, school girl-inspired T-strap styles, but Watson opted for the chunky version that’s quickly become the ‘It’ shoe in Hollywood.

Her black leather loafers were subtly chunky, with a small heel and platform sole that extended out from the shoe ever so slightly. The style added some edge to her otherwise posh ‘fit while still elevating the everyday blue jeans. While a sneaker might have made the look feel a bit casual, the loafers dressed up the classic closet staples — and that’s exactly why I reach for the style year-round. 

Even with a simple top and loose jeans, loafers make a basic, casual outfit seem a bit more refined and chic. It’s the easiest swap with the biggest payoff. Plus, loafers are actually comfortable.
