Parks And Recreation stars Aubrey Plaza and Nick Offerman, 53, reunited for a hilarious Super Bowl commercial for this weekend’s upcoming game between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers in Las Vegas.
In the spot, the former co-stars ride fire-breathing dragons while drinking Mountain Dew’s new flavor Baja Blast while playing their deadpan characters from the beloved former sitcom.
‘I was dying. I was like, “Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes!”‘ Plaza, 39, said about being asked to film the commercial during a Zoom call, per Variety.
‘It was so fun because I love Nick so much and even though we’re not playing our characters in Parks and Rec, it does feel in some way like a little April and Ron reunion.
‘I feel like in some alternate universe, this is exactly what they would be doing. So it all made sense to me,’ Aubrey – who will appear in the upcoming dark comedy Honey Don’t – enthusiastically explained.
In the ad, Aubrey gets stuck in an elevator, hit in the head with pool noodles at a kid’s pool party and is punched repeatedly in a boxing ring – but despite all these mishaps, her character is having a blast.
The ad is designed to let fans know that the Taco Bell fan-favorite Baja Blast is now available in stores for the first time.
In her signature droll tone she starts the spot saying: ‘It’s me. America’s sweetheart, and I just love having a blast…a Mountain Dew Baja Blast.’
She repeats the line about having a blast as she is hit with pool noodles, stuck in an elevator, in a sewer and abducted by aliens.
Then she’s seen riding a fire-breathing dragon and says: ‘I can have a blast anytime, anywhere.
Then Offerman arrives his own breathing dragon and quips, ‘And with anyone?’ as Plaze laughs.
Offerman ends the commercial, saying, ‘I, too, am having a blast.’
‘You know, there could be like a Parks and Rec – Game of Thrones mash-up here, where April and Ron time travel into Game of Thrones times and then we’re just riding those dragons around,’ Plaza joked to Variety. ‘I don’t know, I’m just spitballing here.’
As for her plans for the Super Bowl, Plaza reminisced about Offerman’s past Super Bowl parties.
‘Nick used to have a really good Super Bowl watching party with like all the funniest people,’ Plaza recounted.
‘That was always my favorite part [of the Super Bowl] because you’re just sitting around with Jason Mantzoukas and Rob Huebel and Amy Poehler and all these people, and you just get to hear everybody’s jokes about all the commercials and everything that’s going on.’
In a separate interview with People about the commercial, Aubrey explained her motivation behind doing a Super Bowl ad.
‘There’s so many eyes on that broadcast. It feels like an accomplishment. But the fact that they asked me to do it, I just felt grateful,’ the White Lotus alum told People.
‘It’s one of those things you always dream about doing and then you watch it every year and you’re like, “Oh wow, that person and that person, that person…”
‘So I feel very lucky and I feel kind of like, yeah, I got another notch on my belt. So I think it’s really cool.’
