The Buffalo Bills have made it official, promoting Joe Brady after his nine-game on-the-job interview
The Buffalo Bills have officially promoting interim offensive coordinator Joe Brady to become the team’s fulltime offensive coordinator.
This is, of course, news that should surprise nearly no one within Bills Mafia. Even Joe Brady himself corrected a reporter in-season when asking him about returning “home” for a road game against the Miami Dolphins, saying “this is home,” prior to the team’s season finale.
Brady served as interim offensive coordinator during the 2023 NFL season after Ken Dorsey was dismissed following the team’s Week 10 loss at home to the Denver Broncos.
Prior to Joe Brady being promoted fulltime to the team’s OC role, he had the support of every offensive players and otherwise when asked about his work on an interim basis. Most importantly, quarterback Josh Allen gave his full support of Brady retaining the role as offensive play caller.
In their end-of-season press conferences, head coach Sean McDermott and general manager Brandon Beane both spoke fondly of Brady without giving too much away about the direction they were leaning to officially name an offensive coordinator.
With Brady, the team retains consistency on offense thanks to his prior work as the team’s quarterbacks coach under Ken Dorsey. That role may be what allowed Joe Brady to establish a true connection with Josh Allen prior to calling plays for him at the line of scrimmage.
When Brady took over, the team seemed to establish a more physical identity that leaned on running back James Cook — and re-introduced the running threat of Josh Allen. Overall, Buffalo’s offense seemed to better-operate within the balanced attack being called.
With Dorsey, the Bills averaged 116.5 ypg rushing (failing to reach 100 yards on the ground total in four games). Working with Brady, Buffalo 156.4 ypg rushing, gaining 100 yards or more total in each game with Brady calling plays.
Additionally, Brady showed a willingness and ability to adjust his play-calling on the fly (both within games and at halftime) to better adapt to the defense. Perhaps most importantly, Josh Allen was allowed to do Josh Allen things when the game required them.
With Joe Brady’s promotion official, he’ll now be given the opportunity to more completely install the sort of plays and scheme that he believes will best suit Josh Allen and the offense. Key for Brady will be working with the offensive position coaches, especially wide receivers coach Adam Henry. The team needs more meaningful contributions from the receiver room, whether that comes via play calling or their approach to the football on a given down.
