What They Are
Unlike the traditional French manicure-where the tips are painted white across the nail—the split French manicure only covers half the nail tip, split vertically so only a quarter of your nail is painted. Though often painted in that signature French white, this mani allows you to be playful and creative. You can try out various colors, patterns, or textures on top while the bottom stays neutral.
How to Wear Them
This manicure can truly go with any look. If you want nails that can easily transition from day to night, consider opting for a solid neutral color, such as red, pink, brown, or black. Bold and vibrant hues can add a pop of personality, and if you want to get really creative, you can add patterns, designs, or even 3D elements like rhinestones for some extra pizazz. The key is to strike a balance that reflects your style—whether that’s chic, edgy, or whimsical.
How to Get the Look
Achieving the split French manicure is surprisingly simple. After applying a base color, “you can paint a small dot in the center of the nail with a dotting tool and draw a line horizontally to the left or right, depending on which hand you’re working with at the moment,” says Garcia. “Then paint another line vertically down the center to the tip of the nail.” This will form a small rectangle, which you can then fill in with your polish. “Then add a small stud on the top corner that is filled in shape.”
Once you’re comfortable with the technique, you can experiment with different shapes, like crescents, diagonals, or graphic patterns. (We think this look is just begging for a checkerboard take.) Whatever design you choose, finish with a top coat for a polished and long-lasting finish.
