In case you needed another reason to revisit your lipstick collection, Valentino’s Spring 2024 haute couture show in Paris just proved that full-coverage, bold lipstick is back. On Wednesday, models walked the runway with red and bordeaux lips that added a vampy quality to creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli’s latest collection, Le Salon. This cool-but-classic take on haute couture was a departure from last season, when the house embraced the utilitarian theme, with side parts, bold brows, and lightly glossed lips.
To balance the full-coverage lips, models walked with barely-there complexions and slicked-back, low buns (a hair trend that shows no signs of slowing down). This was the perfect reference to the collection itself, which drew the eye to a singular element of each overall look, like a feathered tunic or metallic tinsel cape. A red lip does the same.
The good news: This moody look is incredibly easy to create, and luckily, Valentino Beauty’s Rosso Valentino Refillable Lipstick comes in a range of satin and matte lip colors to chose from, many in the red and burgundy family. We’re particularly fond of Fearless Violet, a deep berry in the satin finish, and Underdressed Velvet, a deep brick shade.
We’ve seen vampy spring lips on the runway before, like at Dior’s Spring/Summer 2024 show, where makeup creative and image director Peter Philips created “witchy lips” using a deep lipstick and black eyeliner for a shadowy effect. Celebs are even jumping on the trend: Selena Gomez just color-coordinated her ruby dress with a vampy lip at the delayed 2023 Emmy Awards.
Valentino’s runway is just more proof that red lips will always be a staple, and that darker hues—historically are reserved for the colder months—are a perfect choice year-round.
