Kelly Stafford on Monday posted messages calling out fans who booed her family and shared love for the Detroit Lions after the team’s one-point win against her husband, Matthew Stafford, and the Los Angeles Rams.
The Stafford family traveled back to Michigan in a made-for-TV showcase. Kelly posted her four daughters wearing hoodies that read “Detroit born, LA raised” under their No. 9 Rams jackets.
Some fans booed Matthew Stafford’s return, some bars posted that they would not allow his No. 9 Lion’s jersey into their business. Eminem pleaded with Stafford ahead of the game saying, “You owe me this favor bro.”
The Detroit Lions won Sunday 24-23 against the Rams. Here’s all the coverage from The Detroit News.
When he was asked at the postgame press conference how he felt about the city of Detroit, Matthew Stafford said: “I’m happy for the players. I’m happy for those guys.”
The Rams’ quarterback didn’t add anything about the city or the fans.
Kelly Stafford weighed in Monday afternoon.
“What a season.. and for it to end at Ford Field ” Kelly Stafford posted on Instagram with a photo of their family. “Already excited for this Rams team next season.”
She defended her husband saying, “And he will be back next year Detroit, but until then, go get you one!!!”
Another fan commented on one of Kelly’s recent posts saying, “Enough with the Detroit love, they showed their true colors, f them.”
Kelly Stafford responded by writing: “It’s sports. The city wants to win. Everything is fair game… Except the fans who booed my children.”
“Other than that, I loved the atmosphere and the booing just gave my husband more fire. The more you love, the more you hate,” Stafford said. “I consider it all love going both ways. And both that we are out, I hope the Lions fans bring home a Lombardi to that city because that feeling is like no other. Go get it.”
Matthew Stafford spent 12 seasons chasing a title as the quarterback of the Detroit Lions. During that time, Kelly Stafford became the most well-known cheerleader in the arena and online. Her Instagram page of nearly 430,000 followers showed their family’s life in Detroit while living in Bloomfield Township, the birth of four girls, and even her undergoing emergency brain surgery to remove a tumor in 2019.
When Matthew Stafford was traded to the Los Angeles Rams in 2021, both he and Kelly were vocal about their appreciation for Detroit. The couple has made substantial donations to the SAY Detroit Play Center, featuring an artificial turf field with their foundation logo in the middle. The following year, Stafford went on to win the Super Bowl and said he reached the mountain point in his career.
Making the situation even stranger, Lions quarterback Jared Goff spent his first five seasons with the Rams. The Goff-for-Stafford trade marked the first time in NFL history teams swapped quarterbacks who were selected No. 1 overall in the draft. Lions General Manager Brad Holmes came from the Rams too.
In a post from the Rams, Matthew Stafford can be seen hugging his family in the end.
