Emmys 2024: Succession leads nominations as TV’s biggest awards return after four-month delay

For comedian and actor Anthony Anderson, stepping on stage to host the postponed Emmys on Monday night will represent the fulfilment of a lifelong dream.

“It’s something that I’ve always wanted to do…” the 53-year-old Black-ish star told Entertainment Tonight recently. “I wanted it to happen years ago, but everything happens when it’s supposed to happen.”

For many, however, the decision to let Anderson preside over television’s biggest night is a controversial one. His chequered past, which includes multiple sexual assault allegations that he has vigorously denied, has sparked a growing backlash to his casting.

Wednesday fans celebrated as Jenna Ortega received her record-breaking first Emmy nomination last year, in the run-up to the live show.

The Scream star, 20, starred as Wednesday Addams in Netflix’s hit series, which became one of the streamer’s most-watched shows of all time.

Ortega’s record-breaking nomination means she is now the youngest Latina actor to be recognised in an acting category.

The Creative Arts Emmys are a precursor to the main ceremony, which will take place at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles on Monday 15 January.

The former president, who was not at the ceremony at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, beat fellow nominees Morgan Freeman, Angela Bassett, Mahershala Ali and Pedro Pascal in what was by far the most star-studded category at the Creative Arts Emmys.

The nominations for the annual television awards ceremony were announced on 12 July last year; however, due to the Hollywood writers and actors strikes, the Emmys were pushed back from their original 18 September slot.

The final series of HBO’s Succession met predictions and led the nominations, earning a whopping 14 acting nominations and becoming a contender for Outstanding Drama Series (an award it has won twice before).

The British musician has won his first ever Emmy this year thanks to Ted Lasso – for best original music and lyrics in a TV show.

Sheeran was presented with the award last week at the Creative Arts Emmys (which were also delayed due to the writers and actors strikes last year).

The other nominees were songs from other shows: Ginny & Georgia, The L Word: Generation Q, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Ted Lasso (nominated twice, only one of the songs being written by Sheeran), and Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.

The final series of HBO’s Succession met predictions and led the nominations, earning a whopping 14 acting nominations and a nod for Outstanding Drama Series (an award it has won twice before).

Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Strong will compete against each other for the Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series category. This marks the most actors to ever be nominated from the same show in this category.

A similar Succession face-off will take place in the Outstanding Supporting Actor category, where 2022 winner Matthew Macfadyen is nominated alongside his castmates Nicholas Braun, Alan Ruck and Alexander Skarsgård.

Sarah Snook is nominated for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series, while J Smith-Cameron is nominated in the Supporting Actress category.

Including technical categories, Succession picked up 27 nominations in total. Fellow HBO projects The Last of Us and The White Lotus follow close behind with 23 and 24 nominations apiece.

With The Last of Us in the running for multiple Emmys this Monday, fans are hoping the video game adaptation will take home some trophies ahead of its much-anticipated second outing.
