QUEBEC, Canada (TND) — If a Canadian citizen uploads footage of a person stealing a package online, they can find themself in trouble.
Police in Quebec reminded residents of a Canadian law about “violation of private life,” which included alleged thieves.
The reminder from Provincial police comes after a report about a community experiencing a rise in stolen packages from homes.
During an interview with CTV News Montrel, Provincial police communications officer, Lt. Benoit Richard, said “you can not post the images yourself.”
He referred to a Canadian law that states offenders are presumed innocent until proven guilty and “posting that picture could be a violation of private life.”
Sharing security camera footage could bring on a case of defamation he warned.
Police recommend video evidence of a crime should be turned over to them so they can investigate.
Richard’s remarks received attention.
