On Monday, the White House announced that the Biden administration had renominated Julie Su for Labor Secretary, sending her nomination to the Senate once again.
Biden first nominated Su for the role on February 28, 2023, after then-Labor Secretary Marty Walsh announced he would leave the position in March. Su has served as the acting Department of Labor Secretary since Walsh’s departure, but the Senate has stalled her confirmation.
Su’s confirmation has faced vehement opposition from Republican lawmakers as well as moderates like moderates like Sen. Joe Manchin, a Democrat from West Virginia.
The Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus has praised Biden’s decision to renominate Su. CAPAC is continuing to push for her confirmation.
“The daughter of immigrant small business owners, Julie Su has a storied career supporting workers’ rights, working with the business community and organized labor, and helping grow our economy. She has been a superb leader of the Department of Labor—first as a Senate-confirmed Deputy Secretary and now as Acting Secretary—helping implement workplace training programs, convening business and labor to avoid costly shutdowns, and looking out for everyday American workers,” CAPAC Chair Rep. Judy Chu (D-CA) said in a statement.
“I welcome President Biden’s renomination of Acting Secretary Su to the Secretary role, which would make her the first AANHPI Cabinet Secretary in the Biden-Harris Administration, and I urge the Senate to swiftly confirm her elevation and finally put in place permanent leadership at the Department.”
