The St. Louis Cardinals, looking for fresh perspectives within their baseball operations department, have hired former Boston Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom in an advisory role to president of baseball operations John Mozeliak.
Bloom, who oversaw Boston’s baseball operations from the end of the 2019 season before he was relieved from duties last September, led the Red Sox to the American League Championship Series in 2021. Prior to his time with the Red Sox, Bloom spent 15 years in the Tampa Bay Rays baseball operations department, including the final three as the senior vice president of baseball operations.
“I’m excited to join the Cardinals and to be a part of this great organization,” Bloom said in a press release Monday afternoon. “Mo and his team have given me such a warm welcome, and I’m eager to build relationships here and to learn, contribute, and help us win.”
The Cardinals, who finished the 2023 season with their first 90-plus loss season since 1990, had been linked to Bloom dating back to the first weeks of the offseason. After registering the first losing season in his 16-year tenure atop the Cardinals baseball operations department, Mozeliak was looking to add new perspectives and believed an external addition would help refresh a front office that often promotes strictly from within.
“I have known Chaim for a long time, and feel that this is a great opportunity for the St. Louis Cardinals,” Mozeliak said. “It will be good to get an outside perspective of our organization from someone who is as well-respected as Chaim. Having a fresh set of eyes on all aspects of our baseball operations should be helpful.”
The Cardinals have been one of the most active teams this offseason, adding three starting pitchers in Sonny Gray, Lance Lynn and Kyle Gibson, and acquiring two relief pitchers — Nick Robertson and Andrew Kittredge — via trade. By hiring Bloom, the organization can cross off another box in their long-list of offseason to-do items.
